He pleaded not guilty to these charges in court. In 2020, he started a new group called the Peoples Alliance. This new party helped him win the 2022 election. 
Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka is a prominent Fijian politician and former soldier. He has served as the Prime Minister of Fiji since December 24, 2022. 
Rabuka's early life was centered on the village of Drekeniwai. This village is located in eastern Viti Levu, the largest island in Fiji. He attended the Queen Victoria School and served as head boy. Beyond academics, Rabuka was a highly accomplished athlete. He represented Fiji in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. He competed in the shot put, hammer throw, discus, and the decathlon. He also played for the Fiji national rugby union team during the 1970s.
His military career began with training in New Zealand army schools. He graduated in 1973 and attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Rabuka later completed postgraduate studies in both India and Australia. In 1980 and 1981, he served as a senior operation plans manager for UNIFIL. UNIFIL is a United Nations peacekeeping force stationed in Lebanon. During an attack on the UN Headquarters, he saved a French officer. For this bravery, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honour. Queen Elizabeth II also awarded him an OBE in 1981.
In 1987, Rabuka's actions changed the course of Fijian history. As a colonel, he led two military coups in a single year. The first coup occurred on May 14, 1987. He claimed he wanted to reassert ethnic Fijian supremacy. The previous election had resulted in a government with many Indo-Fijian ministers. When the governor-general tried to restore the constitution, Rabuka staged a second coup on September 28. 
Rabuka transitioned from the military to formal politics in the 1990s. He resigned as commander of the armed forces in April 1991. He then joined the cabinet as a Deputy Prime Minister. In 1992, his party, the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei, won the parliamentary election. He served as Prime Minister until 1999. During this time, he negotiated a new Constitution. This document aimed to remove biases that favored indigenous Fijians. However, he lost the 1999 election to Mahendra Chaudhry. 
Following his electoral defeat, Rabuka faced significant legal and political challenges. He served as Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs from 1999 to 2001. However, he faced allegations regarding his involvement in the 2000 coup. Former President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara accused him of being involved in the unrest. Additionally, Military Commander Frank Bainimarama accused him of supporting a mutiny in 2000. 
In recent years, Rabuka has rebuilt his political influence. He resigned from parliament in 2020 to promote national unity. He formed a new political party called the Peoples Alliance. This party contested the 2022 election. Rabuka led a three-party coalition to victory. He now serves as Prime Minister once again.
