Most of the world's cranes live there. Another group flies to Iran. Some cranes used to fly all the way to India. They like to live in shallow marshlands and wetlands. These birds often dip their heads deep underwater to find food. They eat plants, seeds, and even small animals like voles.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Peter Simon Pallas first described the species in 1773. A famous artist named Ustad Mansur painted one in 1625. This was long before the bird was officially named. Scientists use a special name called Leucogeranus leucogeranus. This name comes from Greek words for white and crane. The name Leucogeranus was first used by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1855. Researchers use DNA to learn how these birds are related to others.

Keeping these birds safe is a very big job. They are listed as critically endangered. This is the highest level of threat for a species. In 2010, there were only about 3,200 birds left. That number grew to about 5,500 by the year 2024. Many birds were lost due to hunting and habitat loss. Changing water levels from the Three Gorges Dam can also be a problem. In Iran, a single bird named Omid has lived there since 2006.

It is a highly distinctive species due to its nearly all-white plumage. While the body appears snowy, the black primary feathers become visible during flight. These birds possess a bare, brick-red face and head. They also feature dark bills, pinkish legs, and yellowish irises. The Siberian crane is notable for performing some of the longest migrations of any crane species. Because of their extreme vulnerability, they are currently classified as critically endangered by the IUCN. This is the highest level of threat for any of the 15 crane species.

Understanding how these birds live requires looking at their unique biological traits. Unlike many other cranes, the Siberian crane lacks complex tracheal coils in its neck. Instead, it produces a high-pitched, whistling call that sounds more like a goose than a typical trumpeting crane. In breeding pairs, the birds perform a unison call, which is a type of duet. During these duets, the female produces a higher-pitched "loo" sound. When feeding, these omnivorous birds often immerse their heads entirely underwater. They seek submerged vegetation, such as the leaves of Vallisneria spiralis, in their wintering grounds. To help digest this food, they also swallow pebbles and grit to aid their crop.

The species is divided into distinct breeding and wintering populations. The breeding groups live in the Arctic tundra of Russia. One group resides in the western river basins of the Ob, Konda, and Sossva rivers. A much larger eastern population breeds in the Yakutia region between the Yana and Alazeya rivers. These birds are highly migratory and show high site fidelity, meaning they return to the same locations every year. The eastern population migrates to winter in the Poyang Lake basin in China. Meanwhile, the western population winters in Iran. A central population that once wintered in Bharatpur, India, is now considered extinct.

The history of studying these birds spans several centuries. A Mughal era painting by the artist Ustad Mansur illustrated a Siberian crane around 1625. Later, the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas formally described the species in 1773. The scientific name Leucogeranus was introduced by the French biologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1855. The name itself comes from the Greek words "leukos," meaning white, and "geranos," meaning crane. Modern scientists use DNA sequencing to understand their history. A 2010 molecular phylogenetic study helped rearrange their classification. This study moved the species into the resurrected genus Leucogeranus to ensure the group was monophyletic.

Conservation efforts are vital because the population has faced drastic declines. In the 20th century, hunting and habitat degradation reduced their numbers significantly. In 2010, the world population was estimated at only about 3,200 birds. Most of these birds, roughly 93%, wintered in the Poyang Lake area of China. By 2024, the population had expanded to approximately 5,500 individuals. Despite this growth, the species remains at risk. The Three Gorges Dam and other water development projects may alter the critical habitat at Poyang Lake. In the west, the population is even smaller; a single bird named Omid has wintered in Iran since 2006.

The breeding process of the Siberian crane is a delicate cycle. They return to the Arctic tundra in late April or early May. The female typically lays a clutch of two eggs in the boggy ground near lakes. These eggs hatch after an incubation period of about 27 to 29 days. While the female incubates, the male stands guard to protect the nest. The young birds take about 80 days to fledge. However, the population grows slowly because usually only one chick survives due to aggression between siblings. This results in a yearly population increase of less than 10%.

Beyond biology, the Siberian crane holds deep cultural significance. For the Yakut and Yukaghir peoples, the white crane is a sacred bird. They associate the crane with the sun, the arrival of spring, and kind celestial spirits known as ajyy. In Yakut epics, shamans and shamanesses are even described as transforming into these white cranes. This connection shows how deeply the bird is woven into the human history of the Arctic regions. Protecting the crane is not just about saving a species, but also about preserving a piece of cultural heritage.
