The genus Leucogeranus contains only the Siberian crane and is found in Asia. The genera Grus and Antigone are much more widespread across different continents. Within these groups, species adapt to specific habitats. Birds in large, open wetlands often have more white in their feathers. In contrast, species in smaller wetlands or forests tend to be grayer. This darker coloring helps them maintain a less conspicuous profile while nesting.

History and scientific discovery have helped us understand crane evolution. The family name Gruidae is derived from the genus Grus. This name comes from the Latin word "grus," meaning crane. The scientist Carl Linnaeus originally named the common crane Ardea grus.

The fossil record for cranes is not complete, but it provides important clues. Subfamilies of cranes appear to have been distinct by the Late Eocene, about 35 million years ago. The current genera likely emerged about 20 million years ago. Some ancient lineages, known as Eogruidae, were mostly flightless birds.

Cranes have a massive global significance regarding their distribution and survival. They live on most continents, though they are absent from Antarctica and South America. East Asia holds the highest diversity with eight species. Africa is home to five resident species and a sixth wintering population. In terms of size, cranes are very large and are often considered the world's tallest flying birds. The Sarus crane can reach a length of up to 180 centimeters. The red-crowned crane is the heaviest, weighing up to 8.5 kilograms before migration. Unfortunately, many species are threatened or critically endangered due to human activities. The plight of the North American whooping crane even inspired early U.S. legislation to protect endangered species.

Their behavior and feeding habits show how adaptable they are. Cranes are opportunistic feeders, meaning they change their diet based on the season. They eat everything from grain and berries to fish, insects, and small rodents.
