This terrain features deep gullies and eroded land. Shanxi shares borders with several regions. It meets Hebei to the east and Henan to the south. Shaanxi lies to the west and Inner Mongolia is to the north. The capital and largest city is Taiyuan. Other major prefecture-level cities include Changzhi and Datong.

The province has a long and complex history.

晋侯鸟尊.jpg

During the Spring and Autumn period, the state of Jin existed here. This state eventually split into the states of Han, Zhao, and Wei in 403 BC. Later, the Northern Wei dynasty used northern Datong as an early capital. This was a Xianbei-founded kingdom that ruled much of northern China. During the Tang dynasty, the region was known as Hedong. This name means "east of the river." The famous Empress Wu Zetian was born in Shanxi in 624.

During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Shanxi provided rulers for three different dynasties.

In the later imperial periods, Shanxi became a massive commercial hub. During the Qing dynasty, Shanxi merchants dominated Chinese finance and commerce. They built vast commercial networks that reached far beyond China's borders. These networks extended to Russia, Japan, and Korea. They also reached into Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

The well-preserved Pingyao Ancient City serves as a testament to this economic power. Even Empress Dowager Cixi stayed in the province during her westward flight. This era showed how central Shanxi was to the empire's wealth.

The early 20th century brought significant political changes.

After the Qing dynasty collapsed, Shanxi became part of the Republic of China. From 1911 to 1949, the warlord Yan Xishan dominated the province. He maintained a high degree of de facto autonomy. Yan worked to modernize the province to protect it from rival warlords. He focused on developing resources and improving the economy. He is often seen as a transitional figure in Chinese history. He used Western technology to help preserve Chinese traditions.

Yan Xishan also made major efforts to improve public health.

In 1918, a bubonic plague outbreak killed 2,664 people in northern Shanxi. This event inspired Yan to modernize medical infrastructure. In 1921, he funded the Research Society for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine in Taiyuan. This school offered a unique four-year curriculum. It taught both Chinese and Western medicine together. Students studied sanitary science, bacteriology, and surgical skills. This institution helped form the foundation for modern traditional Chinese medicine in the 1950s.

Shanxi's economic role has shifted significantly over time. In the early Republican era, Shanxi products gained international recognition. For example, Fenjiu won a gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Today, the province is a major energy producer for China. It possesses roughly one third of the country's total coal reserves. This resource endowment shapes the national economy. However, the province faces structural challenges. Its GDP per capita remains below the national average due to resource dependence and environmental constraints.

Cultural heritage is another defining feature of Shanxi.
