In 1928, the modern province of Hebei was officially created. This happened after the capital of China moved from Beijing to Nanjing. The name Hebei was chosen to reflect its location. Since then, the province has undergone several border changes. For instance, the regions of Chengde and Zhangjiakou were merged into Hebei later on.

Today, Hebei is a massive center of population and industry. It is China's sixth-most populous province. It has a population of over 75 million people. Most residents are Han Chinese, but there are also Manchu, Hui, and Mongol groups. The economy relies on agriculture and manufacturing. Hebei is the premier steel producer in China. However, this large-scale industry has contributed to serious air pollution. The province is also a place of great cultural importance. It contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Hebei is deeply connected to the surrounding urban areas. It entirely surrounds the municipalities of Beijing and Tianjin on land. Together, these three areas form the Jing-Jin-Ji megalopolis. This is one of the largest megalopolis clusters in China. The total population of this region is about 130 million people. This is roughly six times the size of the New York metropolitan area. To help manage this growth, Beijing has moved some functions to the Xiong'an New Area. This project helps integrate the three municipalities into one massive, connected system.
