The holotype, which is the single specimen used to describe the species, is known as BMNH R3556. This specimen is a partial skeleton preserved as an impression in sandstone. Unfortunately, parts of the skull and the tail are missing from this fossil. 
Arthur Smith Woodward officially named and described the species in 1907. For many years, the phylogenetic position of Scleromochlus remained a subject of intense debate. Scientists struggled to place it on the tree of life because the fossils are so small. The poor preservation of the bones made it difficult to score important biological characters. 
Different researchers have proposed many different classifications for the genus. In 2017, Nesbitt et al. suggested it might be a basal member of Dinosauromorpha. In 2020, Bennett argued it was not an ornithodiran. He pointed to its osteoderms, which are bony plates in the skin, and its crurotarsal ankle morphology. These features led him to suggest it belonged among the Doswelliidae instead. 
Recent technological advances have changed how we understand this animal. In 2022, Foffa and his colleagues used microcomputed tomographic scans. They performed these scans on seven different specimens to create a complete skeletal reconstruction. This new data strongly supports the idea that Scleromochlus belongs to the Pterosauromorpha. It may be a member of the Lagerpetidae family or a sister group to pterosaurs. 
This connection to pterosaurs is very important for evolutionary science. If Scleromochlus is indeed a pterosauromorph, it provides clues about how pterosaurs evolved. Early pterosaurs also showed adaptations for saltatorial locomotion, or hopping. By studying this small Triassic animal, scientists gain insight into the development of much larger, flying reptiles.
