In 1821, the city became the capital of the Republic of Spanish Haiti. This happened after leaders overthrew the Spanish crown. In 1844, Santo Domingo became the capital of a free nation again. This followed independence from Haiti led by Juan Pablo Duarte. The city has also seen U.S. military interventions in 1916 and 1965.
Today, the city is a modern urban center.
