The path to independence was long and difficult. Spain ceded the western part of the island to France in 1697. This western area became the independent nation of Haiti in 1804. In 1821, a group of Dominicans declared independence from Spain. This period was called the Ephemeral independence because it lasted only two months. Haiti then occupied the territory for twenty-two years. In 1844, the secret society La Trinitaria helped win independence.

After his assassination, the nation faced instability. There was a military coup in 1963 and a civil war in 1965. The authoritarian rule of Joaquín Balaguer followed for many years. Since 1996, the Dominican Republic has moved toward a representative democracy. This means citizens participate in choosing their leaders through elections.

Today, the Dominican Republic has a very strong economy. It has the largest economy in the Caribbean. Between 1992 and 2018, it had an average real GDP growth rate of 5.3%. In 2014 and 2015, growth reached 7.3% and 7.0%. These were the highest growth rates in the Western Hemisphere. This success comes from construction, manufacturing, tourism, and mining.
