Hannah and her husband Elkanah lived in a place called Ramathaim. Hannah promised that if she had a son, she would dedicate him to God. After Samuel was born, she left him at the sanctuary in Shiloh to serve under Eli. Eli was one of the last judges of Israel. One night, Samuel heard a voice calling his name in the dark. He thought it was Eli, but it was actually the Lord speaking. Eli taught him how to listen and answer the call.

As Samuel grew up, he became a trusted leader for all of Israel.

During his youth, the Philistines defeated the Israelites and took their sacred Ark. This was a very hard time for the people. After twenty years of this struggle, Samuel led the Israelites to the hill of Mizpah. They fought against the Philistines and won a great victory. Samuel even set up a large stone at the battle site to remember the event. This victory brought a long period of peace to the land.

Samuel also played a major role in choosing Israel's kings. The people wanted a king so they could be like other nations. At first, Samuel was not sure about this idea. However, he eventually helped Saul become the first king of Israel. Samuel warned the people that kings must still follow God's rules. Later, Samuel went to Bethlehem to secretly choose David to be the next king.

His story begins with his parents, Elkanah and Hannah. Elkanah was a Levite from the district of Zuph. He lived in Ramathaim and had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. Hannah struggled because she had no children, which caused her much heartache. During a pilgrimage to the sanctuary at Shiloh, she prayed fervently for a son. She vowed to dedicate the child to God as a nazirite, a person set apart for religious service.

After Samuel was born, Hannah fulfilled her promise. She brought him to Shiloh to serve under Eli, the priest and one of the last judges. When Samuel was about 12 years old, he experienced a divine calling. He heard a voice calling his name in the night. He thought the voice belonged to Eli, but it was actually the Lord. After Eli realized this, he taught Samuel how to respond to the divine call.

As Samuel matured, he became a trusted prophet for all of Israel. This was a difficult time because the Philistines had defeated the Israelites at Eben-Ezer. The Philistines even captured the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred chest of the Israelites. After twenty years of Philistine oppression, Samuel gathered the people at Mizpah. He led them in a battle against the Philistines and won a decisive victory.

To remember this victory, Samuel erected a large stone at the battle site. This event led to a long period of peace for the land. However, Samuel also faced challenges with leadership. He appointed his sons, Joel and Abijah, as his successors. Unfortunately, they were not worthy leaders because they accepted bribes and perverted judgment. This led the Israelites to demand a king so they could be like other nations.

Samuel initially felt that the request for a king was a rejection of God's rule. After receiving divine revelation, he agreed to help. He identified Saul as the first king of Israel. Samuel served as a "king-maker," guiding the transition of power. He warned the people that kings must be held accountable to God. He also warned them not to fall into the worship of other gods like Asherah or Baal.

Samuel's relationship with King Saul was often tense. He had to confront Saul for disobeying specific commands. For example, during a campaign against the Amalekites, Saul spared the king and the best livestock. Samuel told Saul that God had commanded him to destroy everything. Because of this disobedience, Samuel told Saul that God had removed him as king. Later, Samuel secretly anointed David to be the next king in Bethlehem.
