Elijah

Elijah was a man of great faith.

Elijah prayed for the boy, and the child was revived. This is noted as the first instance of raising the dead in Scripture.

One of the most famous episodes is the confrontation on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. He proposed a test to see which deity could answer with fire.

The prophets of Baal prayed all day but had no success. Elijah built an altar using twelve stones to represent the tribes of Israel. He drenched his offering and the altar with water three times. When Elijah prayed, fire fell from the sky. This fire consumed the sacrifice, the stones, the earth, and the water. The people declared that Yahweh was the true God.

Following this, Elijah faced intense pressure from Queen Jezebel. He fled to the wilderness and eventually traveled to Mount Horeb.

At Mount Horeb, he sought shelter in a cave. He did not find the divine in a mighty wind, an earthquake, or fire. Instead, he experienced a "still, small voice." This encounter led him to assign new leaders. He anointed Hazael as king of Aram and Jehu as king of Israel. He also chose Elisha to be his successor. Elisha went on to lead a group called "the sons of the prophets."

Elijah's departure from Earth is also described as a miracle. The Bible states he ascended to heaven alive.

This event is a major part of his legacy. His influence extends far beyond the ancient kingdom of Israel. In the New Testament, he appears with Moses during the Transfiguration of Jesus.

The Quran also recounts his story, describing him as a prophet and messenger of God. Because of his importance to many faiths, he is the patron saint of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
