The Sakha Republic, also known as Yakutia, is a massive federal subject of Russia. It is located in the Russian Far East along the Arctic Ocean.
The geography of Sakha is shaped by extreme conditions and unique landforms. Much of the territory lies above the Arctic Circle. Nearly all of the republic is covered by permafrost. Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for long periods. This frozen layer influences the ecology and limits forest growth in the south. The landscape is divided into three distinct vegetation belts. The middle region consists of arctic and subarctic tundra. In this area, lichen and moss grow in thick green carpets. These areas serve as important pastures for reindeer.
Below the tundra lies the vast taiga forest region. Taiga refers to the large, coniferous forests found in northern regions. Larch trees are the most dominant species here. In fact, larch trees make up almost 90% of the forest cover. These forests account for about 47% of the total area of Sakha. The southern part of the tundra contains scattered dwarf Siberian pine and larch. The region also features significant mountain ranges. The Verkhoyansk Range forms a large arc from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Laptev Sea. The Chersky Range sits east of the Verkhoyansk Range. The highest point in the republic is Peak Pobeda, which reaches 3,003 meters.
The climate in Sakha is characterized by extreme temperature swings. The region is famous for its severe and intense weather. Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon have recorded some of the lowest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. Verkhoyansk is part of the Northern Hemisphere's Pole of Cold. Oymyakon also holds this title due to its extreme cold. The capital city, Yakutsk, is recognized as the coldest major city in the world. Despite these freezing winters, the summers can be quite warm. This is due to hypercontinental tendencies, where the land is far from the moderating influence of oceans.
Water plays a vital role in the Sakha landscape through its massive river systems. The Lena River is the largest river in the republic. It is a navigable river that stretches 4,400 kilometers. As it flows north, it collects hundreds of small tributaries from the Verkhoyansk Range. Other significant rivers include the Vilyuy River, the Aldan River, and the Kolyma River. The republic is also incredibly water-rich in other ways. There are over 800,000 lakes located within its borders. These include various major lakes and large reservoirs like the Vilyuy Reservoir.
The history of Sakha involves many different groups of people and migrations. Originally, the area was home to Tungusic and Paleosiberian peoples. Groups like the Evenks and Yukaghir practiced hunting, gathering, and reindeer herding. Between the 9th and 16th centuries, the Turkic Sakha people migrated from the Lake Baikal area. They moved to the middle Lena River in several waves. They introduced a pastoral economic system from Inner Asia. In the 17th century, the Russian Tsardom began to colonize the region. This led to the creation of the Yakutsk Oblast. Over time, the population changed through various political shifts and migrations. The region eventually became the Republic of Sakha in 1991.
Sakha is also a land of immense natural wealth and scientific interest. The soil contains vast reserves of oil, gas, coal, gold, and silver. It is a global leader in diamond production. Sakha produces 99% of all Russian diamonds. It also accounts for over 25% of the diamonds mined worldwide.
