Chukotka Autonomous Okrug is the easternmost federal subject of Russia. It is located in the Russian Far East. The region is a unique administrative area. The geography of Chukotka is shaped by its location on the North American plate. Most of Russia sits on the Eurasian plate. The region is bordered by several major bodies of water. To the north lie the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. Both are part of the Arctic Ocean. To the east is the Bering Strait and the Bering Sea. These belong to the Pacific Ocean.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, foreign influence grew in the region. American whalers and traders were very active after the sale of Alaska. The Yukon gold rush in 1898 also brought many foreigners to the area. The Russian government eventually created districts to maintain control.

Despite its large size, Chukotka has a very small population. It is the seventh-largest federal subject in Russia. However, it has only 50,526 people. This makes it the least densely populated region in the country. The capital is Anadyr, which is the largest town. Anadyr is also the easternmost town in Russia.
