It can move boats on water. It can move things on ice. It can even move things on land.

Long ago, sailing was how people traded goods. Ships carried grain to the city of Rome. It was cheaper than using roads.

People used sails to explore the world. They used stars to find their way. This helped them find new lands.

Later, steam engines began to help ships. Steam engines can run on a schedule. They do not need the wind.

Today, many people sail for fun. Some people go on long trips. Others like to race fast boats.

People use sails, wing sails, or even kites to catch the wind. The wind creates power through forces called lift and drag. Sailors set their sails at specific angles to get the most power. This power comes from what is called the apparent wind. This is the wind a moving boat actually feels.

To stay on course, a boat uses special parts to resist the wind. A hull, a keel, or a rudder helps steer the craft. Iceboats use skate runners to glide across the ice. Land yachts use wheels to move on solid ground.

Sailors can travel both upwind and downwind. The direction a boat travels compared to the true wind is called a point of sail. However, most boats cannot sail too close to the direction the wind is blowing. They must find the right angle to keep moving forward.

For most of history, sailing was the best way to travel. It was often faster, cheaper, and safer than traveling by road.

In the Roman Empire, cities relied on ships for food. Rome used about 150,000 tons of Egyptian grain every year. It was actually cheaper to sail grain across the Mediterranean than to move it 15 miles by road. Later, in the 1700s, sailing ships moved coal to London. In 1795, about 4,395 cargoes of coal arrived this way. This required a fleet of about 500 sailing colliers.

Sailing has helped people explore the entire world. The earliest images of sails come from Egypt around 3100 BCE.

Early Austronesian people used outrigger canoes to travel across the Pacific. They used clever tools like stick charts to find their way. The physics of sailing involves a complex balance of forces. Sails derive power from the wind by generating both lift and drag.

To move efficiently, a sailor sets the sails at a specific angle. This angle is determined by the apparent wind. The apparent wind is the wind as it is actually sensed by a moving vessel. Once the wind hits the sail, the forces must be managed. A hull, a keel, or a rudder resists these forces to keep the craft stable. Iceboats use skate runners, while land yachts use wheels to steer their course. This combination of forces allows a vessel to sail both upwind and downwind.

Sailors use different points of sail to navigate. A point of sail is the direction of the boat relative to the true wind. The true wind is the wind direction indicated by a stationary object like a flag.

Eventually, iron-hulled sailing ships emerged as the final evolution of the Age of Sail. These large ships used three to five masts to carry bulk cargo between continents. They remained competitive for a time because they did not need coal or fresh water for steam engines. However, the rise of steam technology changed everything. Steamships could follow strict schedules and use shorter routes through canals. This made sailing less economical for most commercial businesses.

Modern sailing is mostly divided into recreation and organized sport. Recreational sailing includes day-sailing and cruising.

Day-sailing involves short trips without overnight stays. Cruising can involve coastal trips or long passage-making across entire oceans.
