As a young man, he trained for the army and served for eight years. He even fought in the Peninsular War in Portugal. Later, he married Charlotte Hugonin. She encouraged him to spend his energy on science instead of hunting.

Murchison was a very busy leader in the scientific world. In 1855, he became the director-general of the British Geological Survey. He also led the Royal Geographical Society for many different years. He traveled to Russia and the Ural Mountains to study rocks there. In 1841, he used these findings to name the Permian system. He was even knighted in 1846 for his hard work. He received many high honors from different countries during his life.

Murchison’s method involved observing the order of rock successions. In 1831, he traveled to the border of England and Wales. He wanted to see if greywacke rocks followed a specific order. He discovered that these rocks contained unique organic remains, or fossils. These fossils were different from those found in other English rocks. Because of these distinctive fossils, he established the Silurian system. He published his findings in a major work called *The Silurian System* in 1839.

His scientific career was not his first profession. Murchison was born in 1792 at Tarradale House in Ross-shire, Scotland.

After his father died, he trained for the army at the Royal Military College. He served as an ensign in the 36th Regiment of Foot during the Peninsular War. He saw action in Portugal at Roliça and Vimeiro. He also participated in the retreat to Corunna. After eight years of military service, he left the army and married Charlotte Hugonin. His wife played a major role in his transition to science. She encouraged him to focus his energy on geology rather than hunting. This led him to join the Geological Society of London.

Murchison was a highly active explorer and researcher. He worked alongside famous scientists like Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin. He and Lyell explored volcanic regions in France, Italy, and Switzerland. He also studied the complex geological structure of the Alps with Adam Sedgwick. Murchison later expanded his reach to Russia and the Ural Mountains. He traveled there with Édouard de Verneuil and Count Alexander von Keyserling. In 1841, based on these explorations, he announced the Permian system. This system was defined by a vast series of marls, schists, limestones, and sandstones. His work in Russia helped extend European geological classifications to the rest of the continent.

As his career progressed, Murchison took on many leadership roles. In 1855, he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey. He also led the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology. Murchison was a founder of the Royal Geographical Society in 1830. He served as its president during several different periods between 1843 and 1871. His influence was global, and he was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1840. He was knighted in 1846, which earned him the title of Sir. He received many prestigious awards, including the Copley Medal from the Royal Society.

In his later years, Murchison engaged in the "Highlands Controversy." He studied the Highlands of Scotland and believed certain crystalline schists were part of the Silurian period. He thought these rocks were not older than the Silurian because of the limestone and fossils found beneath them. However, later researchers like Charles Lapworth proved his theory was incorrect. They discovered that a system of dislocations had thrust older rocks over younger ones. Despite this error, Murchison remained a powerful figure in science. He even knew about the existence of gold in Australia before it was officially discovered. He learned about it from Cornish miners he met in Cornwall in 1845.

Murchison's legacy is preserved in many names across the globe. There is a crater on the Moon named Murchison. On Earth, many landmarks bear his name, such as the Murchison Falls in Uganda. You can find the Murchison River in Western Australia and the Murchison Sound in Greenland. In New Zealand, several mountains and glaciers are named after him. He died in 1871 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery in London.
