The city is a famous international tourist destination. Its unique position at a crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East has shaped its identity. This location has allowed many different cultures, languages, and architectures to meet here over many centuries.

The history of the city began in ancient times. The city was formed in 408 BC by three cities: Ialyssos, Kamiros, and Lindos. During its Golden Age, the city prospered through sea trade and skilled shipbuilding.

It was also home to the Colossus of Rhodes. This massive statue represented the sun god Helios. Chares of Lindos built the Colossus between 304 and 293 BC. It took 12 years to complete the project. The statue stood near the harbor entrance. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. However, a strong earthquake in 226 BC toppled the Colossus.

The ancient city also featured advanced infrastructure. Hippodamus designed a water supply network and a sewage system.

Different empires controlled Rhodes throughout the centuries. The Romans took control in 164 BC. Under Roman rule, the city became a center for science and the arts. The Romans even adopted Rhodian maritime law for their own shipping. Later, the Byzantine Empire used the city as a trading post. It was a key stop for ships traveling between Alexandria and Constantinople. During the 7th century AD, the Arabs captured the island. They moved the broken pieces of the Colossus to Syria. There, they destroyed the pieces to make coins.

The medieval period was defined by the Knights Hospitallers. They established their headquarters on Rhodes after 1307. Pope Clement V confirmed their possession of the island in 1309. The Knights stayed for two centuries. They built massive fortifications to protect the city.

In 1480, the Ottoman Empire launched a siege led by Mesih Pasha. The defenders successfully repelled the Turkish attacks. This victory prevented an Ottoman incursion into Western Europe. Later, Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson strengthened the defenses. By 1521, the city had some of the strongest fortifications in the Christian world. However, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent led a second siege in 1522. The outnumbered Knights eventually surrendered in December 1522. They were allowed to leave with their wealth. On January 1, 1523, the Knights departed, leaving Rhodes under Ottoman control.

The Ottoman period brought significant architectural changes. The Turks built mosques, mansions, and public baths.

Most churches were converted into mosques. The Greek population moved to new suburbs outside the fortified walls. This created a mix of Oriental and Western architectural styles. Ottoman builders often added enclosed wooden balconies to existing buildings. These additions helped adapt the structures to the local climate. The city also served as a market for agricultural products from the island. In 1856, a massive explosion occurred. A gunpowder magazine under the Church of Saint John was struck by lightning. This event destroyed the church and much of the Grand Master's Palace.

In 1912, Italian troops took control of the Dodecanese. The Italians established the Italian Islands of the Aegean in 1923. The architect Florestano Di Fausto helped design the modern city.

Di Fausto built the Market and the Palace of the Governor. He used an eclectic style. This style mixed Venetian, Renaissance, and Ottoman elements. The Italians also reconstructed the Grand Master's Palace.

The modern era saw both destruction and preservation. During World War II, Allied bombing raids hit the old city in 1944. In July 1944, Nazi authorities deported over 1,700 Jews from Rhodes. About 1,200 of them were murdered at Auschwitz. Following the war, the Greek government protected many buildings. In 1988, UNESCO designated the old town of Rhodes as a World Heritage Site.
