The island has earned many different nicknames throughout history. Some call it the "Island of the Sun" to honor the sun god, Helios. Others call it "The Pearl Island." It is also known as "The Island of the Knights." This refers to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. They ruled the island from 1310 to 1522. The name Rhodes may come from the Phoenician word "erod," meaning snake. This might be because many snakes lived there in ancient times. In Greek, the name is Ródos. It sounds similar to the words for rose or pomegranate.

Human history on Rhodes began long ago. During the Late Pleistocene, dwarf elephants lived on the island. Humans arrived during the late Neolithic period. Evidence of this was found at Kalythies cave. During the Early Bronze Age, major urban settlements emerged. Asomatos was the earliest known urban center. Artifacts like duck-shaped vases suggest trade with Cyprus. Later, the Minoan civilization established a settlement at Tiranda. In the 15th century BC, Mycenaean Greeks invaded the island.
