When the war began, he joined the 31st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army. After the surrender of Bataan in 1942, he escaped to the hills to avoid arrest. He organized the Western Luzon Guerrilla Forces and became a captain. Eventually, he commanded a massive force of 10,000 soldiers. His leadership helped clear the Zambales coast of Japanese forces by early 1945.

Following the war, Magsaysay entered the world of formal politics. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 as a member of the Liberal Party. In 1948, President Manuel Roxas sent him to Washington, D.C. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Guerrilla Affairs there. This role helped secure benefits for Philippine veterans through the Rogers Veterans Bill. He later served as the Secretary of National Defense under President Elpidio Quirino. During this time, he used unconventional methods to fight communist guerrillas known as the Hukbalahap.

His path to the presidency was marked by a desire for justice.

In 1951, he learned that a political ally named Moises Padilla had been killed. Magsaysay arrived in Negros Occidental to find the scene of the crime. He personally carried the body to the morgue, an act that was captured in news photos. He later helped present evidence that led to the conviction of the men responsible. This event became a central part of his 1953 presidential campaign. He ran under the Nacionalista Party and won a decisive victory.

As president, Magsaysay introduced several new traditions and policies. He was the first president to wear the barong tagalog during his inauguration. He also became the first Philippine president to swear on the Bible. To make the government more accessible, he opened the gates of Malacañang Palace to the public. He created the Presidential Complaints and Action Committee to handle citizen grievances. This committee received nearly 60,000 complaints in a single year. More than 30,000 of those issues were settled through direct action.

His leadership had a major impact on international relations and domestic trust. Magsaysay was a strong supporter of the United States during the Cold War. He helped found the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, also called the Manila Pact of 1954. This organization aimed to stop communist movements in various parts of Asia and the Pacific. Domestically, he worked to improve the image of the Philippine Army. He even paid for his own flight costs on a military plane to show personal integrity. His presidency focused on making the government a "house of the people."

His life ended unexpectedly while he was still in office.

On March 17, 1957, Magsaysay died in a plane crash in Cebu. His death left the nation in mourning, and Carlos P. Garcia became his successor. Magsaysay remains the most recent Philippine president to die while serving his term.
