Hammarskjöld's path to leadership began with rigorous academic study. He grew up in Uppsala and attended Uppsala University. By January 1930, he had earned degrees in philosophy and law. He also worked at the Riksbank, which is Sweden's central bank. He served as a state secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He also helped manage the Marshall Plan after World War II. These roles prepared him for global management.

His election to the United Nations was a complex process. The previous Secretary-General, Trygve Lie, resigned in 1952. The Security Council struggled to find a replacement. They first voted for Lester B. Pearson of Canada. However, the Soviet Union used a veto to stop his appointment. In March 1953, French representative Henri Hoppenot suggested Hammarskjöld. The major powers wanted a leader who focused on administration. They believed he would be an unobtrusive technician. The Soviet Union even called him "harmless."

On April 7, 1953, the General Assembly appointed him.

Once in office, Hammarskjöld worked to transform the UN organization. He wanted to improve morale among the staff. He visited every department to shake hands with workers. He even gave up his private elevator for general use. He established a secretariat of 4,000 administrators. He also created a meditation room at the UN headquarters. This room allowed people to be silent regardless of their religion.

He also worked to improve relations between Israel and Arab states. He acted as a mediator between different world leaders.

Hammarskjöld was a pioneer of international peacekeeping. He presided over the creation of the first UN peacekeeping forces. These were the UNEF in Egypt and the ONUC in the Congo. In 1955, he visited China to negotiate for US pilots. In 1956, he helped during the Suez Crisis. He is also credited with allowing the Holy See to participate in the UN.

His leadership style focused on making the UN more responsive to global issues. He used diplomacy to defuse many international crises.

His work in the Congo became highly controversial. In 1960, the new nation of Congo requested UN aid. Hammarskjöld made four trips to the region to help. The Soviet Union criticized his actions during the Congo Crisis. They felt his efforts toward decolonization were insufficient. The Soviets even demanded he resign. They proposed a "troika," which was a three-man directorate.

This system would have included a built-in veto for different groups. Hammarskjöld's refusal to support certain local governments caused deep political tension.

Tragedy struck during his second term in 1961. Hammarskjöld was traveling to negotiate a cease-fire in the Congo. He was on a Douglas DC-6 aircraft. On September 18, 1961, the plane crashed near Ndola. All 16 people on board died in the accident. The exact causes of the crash remained unclear for a long time. His death caused a succession crisis at the United Nations. Because there was no official line of succession, the Security Council had to vote for a new leader.

Despite the controversy in some regions, his legacy is significant. He is the only person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously. This means he was awarded the prize after his death. In the West, he was called a great statesman. US President John F. Kennedy called him the greatest of his century.
