It can be divided into several rounded partial crowns. The leaves are leathery and have five to seven sharp teeth on the edges. The top of the leaf is light green. Scientists classify the cork oak within the section Cerris. This section includes other trees like the Valonia oak and the Turkey oak. Within Quercus suber, there are two main subspecies. The first is the nominate form, Quercus suber subsp. suber. The second is Quercus suber subsp. occidentalis. This subspecies is found along the Portuguese Atlantic coast. It has different shaped fruit scales and longer fruit development times. It also has semi-evergreen foliage. The name Quercus suber comes from Latin. The Romans used "quercus" to describe oak trees. "Suber" is the Latin word for cork.
