People have studied and used oaks for a very long time. Carl Linnaeus named the genus Quercus in 1753. He wrote about 15 different species in his first book. He chose the pedunculate oak, or Quercus robur, as the main type for the group. Fossil records show that oaks have been around for a long time. Some pollen from oaks is about 55 million years old. This comes from the Paleocene-Eocene boundary in Austria. Other fossils from the Middle Eocene are found in Oregon and Japan.

Some oaks are quite small, like the Japanese evergreen oak. Other oaks are huge and live for many centuries. The white oak can reach 600 years of age. In Bulgaria, a Granit oak is estimated to be 1,637 years old. This makes it the oldest oak in Europe. In the United States, the Wi'aaSal tree is at least 1,000 years old. It might even be 2,000 years old. Many oaks live in the Northern Hemisphere. North America has about 90 species, while China has about 100 species.

We use oak in our daily lives more than you might think. The wood is very hard and strong. This makes it great for building things and making furniture. People use oak barrels to age drinks like whisky and sherry. The wood gives these drinks special flavors and colors. The cork oak has a spongy bark. This bark is used to make corks for wine bottles.

An acorn is a type of nut that sits inside a specialized cup called a cupule. Most acorns contain only one seed. The maturation process for an acorn takes between 6 and 18 months. To protect themselves, both the leaves and the acorns contain tannic acid. This substance helps the tree defend against various insects and fungi.

Scientists divide the genus into two major groups based on molecular phylogeny. These are known as the Old World clade and the New World clade.

The Old World clade, or subgenus *Cerris*, includes species found in Eurasia and North Africa. The New World clade, or subgenus *Quercus*, includes species that diversified mainly in the Americas. Within these groups, there are several distinct sections. For example, the *Lobatae* section contains the red oaks of North America. These red oaks have long styles and acorns that take 18 months to mature. In contrast, the *Quercus* section includes white oaks from Europe, Asia, and North America. These white oaks usually have rounded leaf lobes and produce acorns that mature in just one year.

Oaks have a very long evolutionary history. Fossil records include pollen from Austria that dates back to the Paleocene-Eocene boundary, about 55 million years ago.

Other unequivocal records of the genus come from the Middle Eocene. In North America, these fossils are found in Oregon, dating to about 44 million years ago. In Asia, Middle Eocene records have been found in Japan. The modern classification of the genus was shaped by Carl Linnaeus. In 1753, he described 15 species in his work *Species Plantarum*.
