In the field of mathematics, Posidonius made significant attempts at proof. He worked on Euclid's fifth postulate of geometry. This postulate concerns the properties of parallel lines. Posidonius suggested a new way to define parallel lines to make the postulate easier to prove. He also helped define technical terms like "theorem" and "problem." In astronomy, he worked to measure the scale of the cosmos. He estimated the distance from the Earth to the Sun. He calculated this distance to be 9,893 times the radius of the Earth.
