Eratosthenes was born in 276 BC in a city called Cyrene. Cyrene was in a place that is now part of Libya. He was the son of a man named Aglaos. As a young man, he studied many things in a gymnasium. Later, he went to Athens to learn even more. He studied with many famous teachers there. Some people called him "Pentathlos." This name means he was like an all-around athlete. This was because he was good at every area of learning.

He also made many discoveries in math and time. He created a way to find prime numbers. This method is called the "sieve of Eratosthenes." He was also a founder of scientific chronology. Since 7.2 degrees is 1/50 of a full 360-degree circle, he knew the distance between the cities represented 1/50 of the Earth's total curve. He used the distance of 5,000 stadia between the cities and multiplied it by 50. This gave him an estimate of 250,000 stadia for the Earth's circumference.

Eratosthenes also made significant contributions to mathematics and number theory. He developed a specific algorithm known as the Sieve of Eratosthenes. This is an efficient method used to identify prime numbers and composite numbers. A prime number is a number that can only be divided by itself and one. By systematically crossing out multiples of numbers, his sieve leaves only the primes behind. He was also a pioneer in the field of scientific chronology. He used ancient Egyptian and Persian records to estimate historical dates. Using these records, he dated the sack of Troy to 1184 BC.
