Israel has a way to choose leaders.
Israel has many ways to choose leaders.
One leader is the Prime Minister. This person leads the government. Many parties work together to lead.
Some groups have different ideas. Some focus on land. Other groups focus on religion.
Small groups can have a big say. They help the larger groups make choices. This helps the country run.
It is a very busy system. Many people help make the rules.
Israel uses a system called parliamentary democracy. In this system, people vote for many different political parties. These parties represent different ideas and groups of people. The Prime Minister is the head of the government.

Because there are so many parties, no single group is usually big enough to lead alone. This means large parties must form a coalition. A coalition is a group of parties that work together to rule. This gives small parties a lot of power. They can help decide which laws to pass. This makes the government a busy place. The Knesset is the name of the parliament where these leaders meet.
Israel uses a system called parliamentary democracy to run its country. In this system, the people elect many different political parties to represent them. The Prime Minister serves as the head of the government. Most of these parties are Zionist parties, which focus on the Jewish people. These groups often split into three main camps: Labor Zionism, revisionist Zionism, and religious Zionism. There are also other groups that are not Zionist. These include secular left-wing groups and Israeli Arab parties.
How the government works depends on how many seats a party wins. Israel uses a way of voting called proportional representation. This means the whole country acts as one big area for voting. Because of this, many different parties can get into the legislature, called the Knesset.
The history of Israeli politics began with the formation of the state in 1948. At that time, the region was under British rule. For many years after the 1948 war, the Mapai party led the government. This changed in 1977 when Menachem Begin led the Likud bloc to victory. Begin served as prime minister until he resigned in 1983 for health reasons. He was followed by Yitzhak Shamir. Later, Yitzhak Rabin led the Labor party to a win in 1992. After his death in 1995, Shimon Peres became the prime minister. These leaders helped shape the early years of the nation.
Many leaders have led Israel through different times and challenges. Benjamin Netanyahu has served as prime minister during several different periods. He first won in 1996 and led a right-wing coalition. He later served again from 2009 to 2021. Other leaders include Ariel Sharon, who formed the Kadima party in 2005. Ehud Olmert took power after Sharon suffered a stroke in 2006. Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid also held the role in 2021 and 2022. These leaders had to manage many different groups of people and ideas.
Politics in Israel often focuses on the Arab-Israeli conflict. This makes the terms "left" and "right" feel different than in other places. The political left often wants to compromise on land to find peace. They also value secular democratic values.
Israel operates under a parliamentary democracy. In this system, the Prime Minister serves as the head of government. The legislature is called the Knesset. This body is made up of many different political parties. Most of these parties are Zionist parties. These groups focus on the Jewish people. They generally fall into three camps: Labor Zionism, revisionist Zionism, and religious Zionism. Other groups exist as well. These include non-Zionist Orthodox religious parties and secular left-wing groups. There are also Israeli Arab parties that are non-Zionist or anti-Zionist.
The way elections work is through proportional representation. In this system, the entire country acts as one single constituency. This means voters choose parties rather than local representatives. This method encourages a large number of political parties to form. Many of these parties have very specialized platforms. They often advocate for specific interest groups. Because many parties win similar numbers of seats, no single party usually wins a majority. A majority requires at least 60 seats in the Knesset. To govern, parties must form a coalition. A coalition is a group of parties that agree to work together.
This system gives small parties significant influence. They can act as "kingmakers" in the government. A kingmaker is a small party that decides which larger party gets to lead. They can use this power to block certain laws. They can also promote their own specific agendas. This can sometimes go against the goals of the larger party in power. This makes the political landscape very fragmented. Small groups, such as Haredi religious parties, can have a large impact on national decisions.

Many leaders have shaped the nation since 1996. Benjamin Netanyahu won the 1996 election. This was the first time Israelis directly elected a prime minister. He led a right-wing coalition that focused on security. Later, Ariel Sharon formed the Kadima party in 2005. This caused a major realignment in Israeli politics. Kadima was a centrist party that joined former rivals from the left and right. After Sharon suffered a massive stroke in 2006, Ehud Olmert became acting prime minister. Olmert later became the full prime minister after the March 2006 elections.
Recent years have seen many changes in leadership. Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power in 2009. He served several terms, including a long period from 2009 to 2021. In 2021, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid formed a coalition to replace the Netanyahu government. Bennett served as prime minister in June 2021. When that government dissolved in June 2022, Lapid took over. Finally, after the 2022 legislative election, Benjamin Netanyahu returned again. His Likud party formed a government with several religious and nationalist parties. This new government was sworn in on December 29, 2022.
