He served as the seventh prime minister of Israel during two distinct periods. His first term lasted from 1983 to 1984. He returned to the office for a second term from 1986 to 1992. Before becoming a national leader, Shamir was a prominent member of underground militant groups. His life moved from revolutionary activities to high-level diplomacy and government leadership. He shaped Israeli policy through decades of intense regional conflict.

Shamir's early life was marked by significant upheaval in Europe. He was born Yitzhak Yezernitsky on October 22, 1915, in Ruzhany, Poland. His parents were Perla and Shlomo, who owned a leather factory. As a young man, he joined Betar, a Zionist youth movement. He studied law at the University of Warsaw before emigrating to Mandatory Palestine in 1935. To protect his identity, he used the forged name Shamir. He later explained that the name represented a thorn or a rock that could cut steel.

During the era of British rule in Palestine, Shamir became involved in paramilitary organizations. He joined the Irgun, a group that opposed British control. During World War II, the Irgun split into different factions. Avraham Stern and Shamir formed a breakaway group called Lehi, also known as the Stern Gang.

After Stern was killed in 1942, Shamir rose to lead the movement. He helped reorganize Lehi into small, secretive cells. He even used the nickname "Michael" to honor Irish Republican leaders.

Shamir’s leadership of Lehi involved violent actions that caused great controversy. In April 1948, members of the Irgun and Lehi carried out the Deir Yassin massacre.

During this event, at least 107 Palestinian villagers were killed. Many of these victims were civilians. This event caused widespread fear and led many Palestinians to flee their homes. The actions were strongly condemned by many Jewish intellectuals, including Albert Einstein. These leaders signed an open letter to the New York Times to protest the violence.

Following the establishment of Israel, Shamir transitioned into official government service. Between 1955 and 1965, he worked for the Mossad, which is Israel's national intelligence agency. During this time, he directed Operation Damocles. He eventually resigned from the Mossad after Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion ordered the program to end. In 1969, Shamir joined the Herut Party. He was elected to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, in 1973 as part of the Likud alliance.

Shamir held several high-ranking positions within the Israeli government. He served as Speaker of the Knesset after the Likud won the 1977 election. In 1980, Prime Minister Menachem Begin appointed him Foreign Minister.

He held this role during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. After Begin stepped down, Shamir won the leadership election for the Herut party in 1983. This victory allowed him to become the Prime Minister of Israel. He navigated complex political landscapes, including a grand coalition with Shimon Peres.

His final years in office involved difficult peace negotiations and shifting political tides. Shamir was known for his resistance to a two-state solution during the First Intifada. However, he eventually participated in the Madrid Conference in 1991.
