Many people call this period the Ice Age. It began about 2.58 million years ago. It lasted until 11,700 years ago. This epoch was a time of many changes. The world moved through many cycles of cold and warmth. These cycles shaped the land and the life on it. It is a vital part of our planet's story.

During this time, the climate changed in a repeating way. The world went through cold periods called glacials. These were followed by warmer periods called interglacials.

During the cold times, huge sheets of ice grew. At their biggest, ice covered 30% of the Earth's surface. This ice was very thick and heavy. As the ice grew, it trapped much of the world's water. This caused the sea levels to drop quite low.

The climate during the Pleistocene was highly variable due to recurring glacial cycles. These cycles consisted of long, cold glacial periods and shorter, warmer interglacial periods.

During peak glaciation, massive continental ice sheets grew across the Northern Hemisphere. In North America, the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets covered vast regions. In Europe, the Fenno-Scandian and Alpine ice sheets dominated the landscape. These ice sheets were incredibly thick and heavy. As they grew, they trapped enormous volumes of water. This caused global sea levels to drop by as much as 120 meters or more. This drop exposed continental shelves and created land bridges, such as Beringia, which connected Asia and North America.

Geologists divide the Pleistocene into several distinct stages or ages. These include the Gelasian, the Calabrian, the Chibanian, and the Upper Pleistocene.

The transition between these stages is often marked by changes in the Earth's magnetic field or fossil records. A significant moment was the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. This event changed the rhythm of the climate cycles. Before this transition, glacial cycles occurred roughly every 41,000 years. After the transition, the cycles became asymmetric 100,000-year cycles. This change made the variations in climate much more extreme for the planet.
