This was the last ice age. Huge sheets of ice covered much of the land. Large ice sheets covered parts of North America. 
In Europe, the ice was also very big. It reached into many lands. The ice moved forward and then back again.
Because of the ice, the sea was much lower. This changed the shape of the world. 
It was a very different time for our Earth.

This period worked through cycles of cold and warmth. Scientists call the cold phases glacials. These are separated by warmer times called interglacials. During the Last Glacial Period, glaciers would move forward and then retreat. The coldest part was the Last Glacial Maximum. This happened between 26,000 and 20,000 years ago.
Different parts of the world had different names for these ice events. In the British Isles, people call it the Devensian. This name comes from the Latin word for people living by the Dee River. 
Ice covered huge parts of the world during this time. 

This period changed how the Earth looks today. Because so much water was frozen in ice, the sea level was much lower. 
The Last Glacial Period (LGP) was a significant era of Earth's history. 
Climate during this era was defined by cyclical changes in temperature. These cycles are driven by Milankovitch cycles, which are periodic variations in the Earth's orbit. These orbital changes pace the transition between different climate phases. A glacial is a cold phase where glaciers advance across the land. These are separated by warmer periods called interglacials. During the LGP, the Earth experienced alternating episodes of glacier advance and retreat. The coldest point was the Last Glacial Maximum, occurring between 26,000 and 20,000 years ago. 
Glacial coverage varied greatly depending on the geographic location. 

Because different regions experienced unique ice movements, they have different names. In the British Isles, geologists call the LGP the Devensian. This name comes from the Latin word for people living near the River Dee. In Ireland, the period is known as the Midlandian. In the Alps, it is called the Würm glaciation. North American researchers use names like the Wisconsinan or the Pinedale in the Rocky Mountains. In Northern Europe, it is often called the Weichselian or Vistulian. These names help scientists organize their research based on specific regional ice deposits.
Smaller ice formations also existed in mountain ranges across the globe. In the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, glaciers advanced significantly between 47,000 and 27,000 years ago. In Africa, glaciers appeared in the High Atlas and the mountains of Ethiopia. The Kilimanjaro massif in East Africa hosted an ice cap of several hundred square kilometers. In New Zealand, an ice sheet covered the Southern Alps. Even in Australia, small areas near Mount Kosciuszko were glaciated. These mountain glaciers show how much colder the global environment was compared to today.
The transition out of the LGP involved complex environmental changes. 
The LGP had a massive impact on the physical structure of the Earth. One of the most significant effects was the reduction of global sea levels. Because so much water was trapped in massive ice sheets, the oceans were much shallower.
