A seven-year-old niece was also wounded during the incident. Pilika remained in critical condition in a hospital for several days. She died on July 13, 1999. Her funeral was a massive event for the nation. Approximately 10,000 mourners attended the ceremony. This was one of the largest funerals in recent Cambodian history.

The circumstances surrounding her death became a subject of intense debate. In October 1999, the French magazine L'Express published claims regarding her death. The magazine suggested her diary described a love affair with Prime Minister Hun Sen. They claimed Bun Rany, the Prime Minister's wife, was responsible for the shooting. Bun Rany denied these charges and threatened legal action for defamation. The magazine claimed they had documents and witnesses to support their report. However, no suspects were ever identified or arrested by authorities. Kek Galabru, president of LICADHO, noted that the lack of progress reflected issues with impunity in Cambodia. In 2003, a book titled Piseth Pilika: A True and Horrible Story was published. This book included extracts from her alleged diaries. The book was eventually removed from shelves by police officers.
