After five years of gathering peer feedback, he published the final version in 1728. The completed work spanned 783 pages and contained 64 chapters. It also included 42 detailed plates illustrating various surgical instruments and appliances.
Fauchard introduced several revolutionary treatments that are still recognizable in modern dentistry. He was among the first to suggest dental fillings to treat cavities. He recommended using amalgams made of materials like lead, tin, or gold. 

Beyond restorative work, Fauchard made significant observations regarding dental pathology and hygiene. He correctly asserted that acids from sugar derivatives, such as tartaric acid, were responsible for dental decay. He also used a microscope to disprove the "tooth worm" theory, showing no evidence of worms in decay. 
Fauchard was also an inventive engineer who designed specialized tools for oral surgery. He created many instruments by adapting tools from watchmakers, jewelers, and barbers. One of his most famous inventions was a manual dental drill. This device was powered by catgut twisted around a cylinder. 
Fauchard's legacy continues to influence the medical community and the field of dentistry. His work provided a foundation for later experts like Etienne Bourdet, who improved dental prostheses. In the 19th century, the American dentist Chapin A. Harris frequently cited Fauchard's pioneering work. Fauchard spent much of his life fighting against "quackery," or fraudulent medical practices. He denounced charlatans who used dangerous acids to remove tartar or used fake fillings. He lived to be 82 years old, passing away in Paris on March 22, 1761. His life's work ensured that dentistry would be treated as a respected branch of medicine.
