Mathematical clarity improved as artists and scholars wrote treatises on the subject. Leon Battista Alberti formulated a theory based on planar projections. Instead of using complex conical projections, he showed how light rays strike the picture plane. He used the mathematics of similar triangles, a concept originally formulated by Euclid.
