A personal computer, often called a PC, is a tool designed for one person to use. 
How these machines work depends on special parts called hardware and software. Hardware is the physical part of the computer that you can touch. Software is the set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do. Most people use commercial software to run their computers. This can be free software or software that you must pay for. Some software is open-source, which means it is shared freely for anyone to use. You can run many different programs without having to write your own code. 
Long ago, computers were much too large for a single person to own. In the 1960s, machines were often as big as two desks. They could weigh as much as half a ton! Scientists had to invent new ways to make them smaller. In 1959, Robert Noyce developed the silicon integrated circuit chip. Later, in 1971, Federico Faggin helped create the first single-chip microprocessor. This tiny chip acts like a brain for the computer. It made it possible for computers to become small and cheap enough for homes. 
Many famous computers appeared during the 1970s. The Altair 8800 was a very important machine from 1974. It is often called the spark that started the microcomputer revolution. In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak sold the Apple I circuit board. Later, the Commodore PET arrived in 1977 as a mass-marketed computer. The Apple II and the TRS-80 also joined it that same year. These three machines are sometimes called the "1977 trinity." 
Today, most people recognize certain types of computers quickly. Since the early 1990s, many PCs have used Microsoft Windows. These often use Intel chips, which is a combination called "Wintel." Other people prefer the Mac platform made by Apple. You might also see computers running Linux, which is a free system. Some computers even use a system called ChromeOS. Whether it is a desktop or a laptop, these tools connect us to information.

The development of the PC was made possible by semiconductor advances. In 1959, Robert Noyce developed the silicon integrated circuit (IC) chip. Later, Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng developed the metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) transistor. Federico Faggin later developed the silicon-gate MOS integrated circuit in 1968. In 1971, Faggin used this technology to create the Intel 4004. This was the first single-chip microprocessor. This tiny component allowed computers to become small and affordable. These microprocessors moved computers from large rooms to individual desks. 
Early microcomputers in the 1970s were often sold as kits for hobbyists. These users had to use toggle switches to enter instructions. They also had to add peripherals like keyboards and printers themselves. The Micral N was an early non-kit microcomputer based on the Intel 8008. In 1973, IBM developed a portable prototype called SCAMP. SCAMP could emulate an IBM 1130 minicomputer. Because it allowed single-user portable computing, it was a revolutionary concept. 
The Altair 8800, released in 1974, is a major milestone. It is recognized as the spark that ignited the microcomputer revolution. It was the first commercially successful personal computer. The Altair used the 8-bit Intel 8080 microprocessor. Its design led to the S-100 bus, which became a standard. Even Microsoft began as a company by providing Altair BASIC for this machine. This success changed how the industry viewed small computers. 
The year 1977 saw the rise of the "1977 trinity." This group included the Commodore PET, the Apple II, and the TRS-80. The Commodore PET was the first mass-marketed ready-assembled computer. The Apple II was announced in April 1977. The TRS-80 followed in August and sold over 100,000 units. These machines moved computing away from hobbyist kits. They allowed a wider range of people to use computers for practical tasks. 
Today, the market is dominated by specific platforms. Since the 1990s, the "Wintel" platform has been ubiquitous. This term combines Microsoft operating systems with Intel x86 architecture CPUs. Other popular alternatives include the Apple Mac platform running macOS. There are also free, open-source, Unix-like systems like Linux. Some devices even use the Linux-derived ChromeOS. While the term PC often refers to Windows machines, it technically describes any personal computer.
