Through these staining methods, Ehrlich discovered several critical biological details. He identified a new type of cell by observing granules in the protoplasm of certain cells. He named these "mast cells," a term derived from the German word for animal feed. His work also allowed scientists to distinguish between different types of white blood cells, or leucocytes. He could tell the difference between lymphocytes, eosinophil granulocytes, and various mononuclear leucocytes. This ability to categorize cells became essential for diagnosing blood diseases like leukemia and anemia. 
Ehrlich's career was deeply connected to other great scientists of his time. 

One of Ehrlich's most famous concepts was the "magic bullet." 
Ehrlich's scientific achievements earned him global recognition. In 1908, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He shared this honor with Élie Metchnikoff for their collective work on immunity. His research also helped develop an antiserum to fight diphtheria. He also created methods to standardize therapeutic serums, making them safer and more reliable for patients. His leadership led to the founding of the Institute of Experimental Therapy in Frankfurt. 
Even after his death in 1915, Ehrlich's influence remained strong.
