Due to financial needs, he studied medicine at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy in Berlin. This school trained military physicians. During his studies, he researched the antiseptic properties of iodoform to prevent infection. He also studied ophthalmology, which is the branch of medicine dealing with the eyes. His meticulous observations of eye diseases helped him later in infectious disease research.
His professional life was closely linked to his military service. For every semester of state-funded study, he served one year as a military surgeon. He served with the Second Hussar Regiment from 1881 to 1883. Later, he worked at the Imperial Health Office under the famous researcher Robert Koch. In 1895, Behring became a Professor of Hygienics at the University of Marburg. He held this position for the rest of his life. In 1904, he founded the Behringwerke company in Marburg to produce vaccines and antitoxins.
In 1901, Behring received the very first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Nobel Committee honored him for his work on serum therapy. This work opened a new path in medical science. It gave physicians a "victorious weapon" against illness. 
Behring’s scientific legacy continues through many modern organizations. His name is used by companies like CSL Behring and Novartis Behring. He also studied a substance called "TC" in 1905. He believed this substance helped prevent bovine tuberculosis in cattle. Although he could not find a human version, his work in immunology was transformative.
