Paranthropus was a group of early relatives of humans. 
These creatures had very strong heads. They had a ridge on top of their skulls. This is called a sagittal crest. It helped hold large muscles for chewing.
Even with big heads, their bodies were small. They walked on two legs.

These relatives had very special bodies built for eating. They had large, flat teeth with thick enamel. This helped them grind up tough or gritty food. Their skulls were also very strong and tall. They had a sagittal crest, which is a ridge on top of the skull. This ridge acted like an anchor for huge chewing muscles.
Scientists have spent many years finding and naming these fossils. Robert Broom first named the genus in 1938. He used the name P. robustus for the first type. A schoolboy named Gert Terblanche found a key fossil near Pretoria, South Africa. Later, in 1959, Mary Leakey found P. boisei in Tanzania. Her husband Louis originally gave it a different name.
There are many interesting facts about their size and movement. Even though they had huge heads, their bodies were quite small. For example, a male P. robustus weighed about 33 to 42 kilograms. A male P. boisei weighed about 30 to 45 kilograms. They were bipeds, which means they walked on two legs. Their hips and feet were similar to modern humans.
Learning about Paranthropus helps us see how life changes. They lived during a time when Africa was drying out. This caused forests to shrink and open savannas to grow.

The physical structure of Paranthropus was highly specialized for eating. They possessed massively built, tall, and flat skulls. A prominent feature was the sagittal crest. This is a bony ridge running along the midline of the skull. The crest served as an anchor for large temporalis muscles. These muscles provided the power needed for heavy chewing. Their teeth also showed specialized adaptations called post-canine megadontia. This means they had very large molars with thick enamel. Such teeth helped them process abrasive or gritty foods. While their heads were large, their braincase volume was relatively small. It averaged about 410 to 530 cubic centimeters. This is comparable to gracile australopithecines but smaller than the genus Homo.
Different species within the genus had different ways of eating. P. boisei is thought to have been a herbivore. It likely preferred abundant, starchy bulbotubers. The jaw hinge of P. boisei was adapted for grinding food in a side-to-side motion. This movement is efficient for processing abrasive plant matter. In contrast, P. robustus was likely an omnivore. It may have chewed its food in a front-to-back direction. This different strategy might have allowed P. robustus to process tougher foods. P. aethiopicus is considered the earliest member of the genus. Its oldest remains come from the Ethiopian Omo Kibish Formation. These fossils date back to 2.6 million years ago. Some scientists believe P. aethiopicus was the direct ancestor of the other species.
