Sometimes, history in Oxford was quite difficult. In 1209, some scholars left Oxford to start Cambridge University. This happened after a person in town hanged two scholars. In 1355, a large fight called the St. Scholastica Day Riot occurred. This conflict lasted for several days and caused many deaths. During the 1500s, religious changes also affected the city. Some people were punished for their religious beliefs during this time.

These are the River Thames, known locally as the Isis, and the River Cherwell.

The name "Oxford" has deep roots in Old English. It comes from the word Oxenaforda, which means "ford of the oxen." This refers to a shallow crossing in the river where oxen could pass through. The town held strategic importance because of this crossing. It controlled the upper reaches of the Thames where it meets the Cherwell. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the area became even more significant. In 1071, a Norman lord named Robert D’Oyly built Oxford Castle to secure control.

History in Oxford has included periods of intense conflict. In 1209, tensions between the town and the scholars led to a serious event. A townsperson hanged two scholars for an alleged murder. This caused many academics to flee and found Cambridge University. Later, the St. Scholastica Day Riot of 1355 lasted for several days. This riot between townspeople and students resulted in around 93 deaths. The city also faced religious strife during the English Reformation. During the Marian persecutions, several people were executed for heresy.

During the 16th century, Oxford underwent major structural changes. In 1542, the city was granted official city status. This happened when the Diocese of Oxford was created. At this time, the Christ Church college chapel was made a cathedral. This change officially granted the city its privileges. Oxford also played a role in the English Civil War. Between 1642 and 1646, King Charles I made Oxford his de facto capital. He moved his court to the city to use it as his headquarters after being expelled from London.

The economy of Oxford has changed many times over the centuries. In the 19th century, the city saw growth in traditional industries. Brewing and publishing were very important during this time. Oxford University Press became a major employer. In 1910, an entrepreneur named William Morris founded a motor car business. He opened an assembly plant at Cowley. This started an industrial boom that helped the city grow beyond the university.
