It sits in a geographically diverse area. The Pennines hills lie to the north and east. To the south, the land transitions into the Cheshire Plain. The city of Salford borders Manchester to the west. Together with surrounding towns, it forms the Greater Manchester Built-up Area. This large conurbation has a population of 2.87 million people. The city itself had over 589,000 residents in 2024.

The city's origins are tied to ancient settlements and Roman military strategy. Long before the Romans, the Brigantes tribe held a stronghold on a sandstone outcrop. This site is where Manchester Cathedral stands today, opposite the River Irwell. Around AD 79, the Roman general Agricola ordered the construction of a fort. They named this fort Mamucium.

It was built on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the Medlock and Irwell rivers. The Roman habitation likely ended by the mid-3rd century. However, the fort may have supported a small garrison until the early 4th century.

Archaeologists first investigated the site in 1906.

The name Manchester has several interesting theories regarding its etymology. The name likely comes from a Latinised version of an older Brittonic name. One theory suggests the name refers to a breast-shaped hill. This comes from the Brittonic word for 'breast'. Another recent theory suggests the name relates to a local river goddess. The word for 'mother' in Brittonic might be the source. The suffix '-chester' comes from Old English. It means a Roman fortification or a fortified town.

Citizens of the city are known as Mancunians.

Manchester underwent a massive transformation during the Industrial Revolution. It became the world's first industrialised city. This period saw a boom in textile manufacture. The city became a global leader in processing cotton. Because of this, it earned nicknames like "Cottonopolis" and "Warehouse City."

To support this growth, the city developed advanced transport systems. The Bridgewater Canal opened in 1761 as Britain's first wholly artificial waterway. In 1830, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened. This was the world's first intercity passenger railway. These developments helped move coal and raw cotton efficiently.

Industrialisation brought both great wealth and social struggle to the city. The rapid, unplanned urban expansion changed the landscape forever. In 1819, a large peaceful protest occurred in St Peter's Square. This event became known as the Peterloo Massacre. Soldiers charged the crowd, killing at least 18 people and injuring over 700.

The city also became a center for new political ideas. It was home to Manchester Liberalism and the Anti-Corn Law League. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels both had links to the city. Engels lived in the area and wrote about the working class. The city was also a hub for the Suffragette and Chartist movements.

The 19th and 20th centuries brought further structural changes. Manchester attained official city status in 1853. In 1894, the Manchester Ship Canal opened.

This canal linked the city to the Irish Sea. This created the Port of Manchester and boosted trade. However, the city's fortunes declined after the Second World War. This was due to a process called deindustrialisation. A major bombing in 1996 also impacted the city center.

Today, Manchester is a diverse and modern metropolitan hub. It is famous for its architecture, culture, and scientific output.
