The wood was porous, meaning it had tiny holes. These holes allowed water and air to leak back into the barrel. This prevented him from maintaining a true vacuum. In 1647, he shifted his focus to pumping air out of enclosed containers instead.

To achieve this, he developed an air pump to remove air from a space. This led to his most famous demonstration involving the Magdeburg hemispheres.

These were two large metal halves of a sphere joined together. Guericke used his pump to remove the air from the space between the halves. This created a vacuum inside the sphere. Because the air was gone, there was no internal pressure to push back. The atmospheric pressure from the outside pushed the two halves together with immense force. To prove this strength, he once used 12 horses to pull them apart. The horses could not separate the hemispheres, demonstrating the power of air pressure.

Guericke's career was deeply intertwined with his political duties. He was born into a leading patrician family in Magdeburg. His father and grandfather had both served as mayors. In 1626, he joined the city council as a political representative. However, his life was disrupted by the Thirty Years' War. In May 1631, the city suffered the Sack of Magdeburg. This was a devastating event where imperial troops destroyed much of the city. About 80 percent of the 25,000 inhabitants died. Most of the 1,900 buildings were destroyed by fire, including all of Guericke's property.

He later helped rebuild the city as an engineer.

In 1646, Guericke was elected Burgomeister, the city's chief magistrate. He held this powerful position for forty years until 1678. During this time, he went on many diplomatic missions to European courts. He met kings, dukes, and emperors to represent Magdeburg's interests. He often used his scientific inventions to impress these leaders. For example, he demonstrated his air pump at the Reichstag in Regensburg in 1654. He also demonstrated his work to the King of Prussia in 1663. The King was so impressed that he granted Guericke a lifetime pension.

Guericke's scientific findings were shared through several important publications. Much of his work was first brought to light by Friar Gaspar Schott. Schott published an account of Guericke's vacuum experiments in 1657. This work helped inspire the famous scientist Robert Boyle. Boyle later published his own important experiments on air pressure in 1660. Guericke eventually published his own major work, titled *Experimenta Nova*.
