The period leading to independence was very difficult. Before the Algerian War of 1954–1962, Oran had many Europeans. In July 1962, the FLN entered the city after a ceasefire. This led to the Oran massacre. In this event, between 95 and 365 people were killed. Many others disappeared. This caused a large exodus of Europeans and Jews to France. In 1962, most of these groups were repatriated to France.
Today, Oran is a modern city with distinct sections. The old quarter contains a casbah and an 18th-century mosque.
