Later, the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb occurred in 699 AD. Various groups like the Abbasids, Aghlabids, and Fatimids ruled the area known as Bona. The city was relocated to its present site following flooding and destruction in 1033.
The modern era of the city saw significant industrial growth. During French rule, the city was called Bône. Between 1856 and 1869, a sheltered port was constructed to handle iron ore. This ore came from the Mokta el Hadid mines. In 1864, the first railroad in Algeria was opened to connect the mines to the docks. 
During World War II, Bône became a strategic location for Allied forces. In 1943, it was a major goal during Operation Torch. The U.S. and British armies used the city as a crucial highway and sea location. This helped the invasion of Tunisia and the eventual removal of Axis powers from Africa. 
Today, Annaba is a major center for tourism and education. The landscape includes mountains, hills, and plains. The mountains near Seraïdi are a popular attraction for mountain tourism.
