The fusion reaction creates high-speed neutrons. These neutrons can then cause additional fission in materials like depleted uranium. This can make the explosion even larger. This two-stage method allows for weapons of almost any size. The largest nuclear weapon ever detonated was the Soviet Union's Tsar Bomba. It was a three-stage weapon with a yield of over 50 megatons. In contrast, the W54 weapon had a much smaller yield of only 10 tons of TNT.
