For a long time, explorers tried to find this path. They wanted a way to trade with Asia. But thick ice and rough waters blocked them. In 1850, Robert McClure found the route. Later, Roald Amundsen made the first trip by ship. He did this from 1903 to 1906.

Today, the Arctic is changing. Climate change is causing sea ice to melt. This makes the water easier for ships to use. In 2007, the passage was open without icebreakers.

Some ships may use it to save time on long trips. However, the water can still be shallow. Large chunks of ice can also stay in the way. Because of this, sailing there is still hard and risky.

It sits near the northern coast of North America. The route is made of many different waterways. These waters are sometimes called the Canadian Internal Waters.

For a long time, people wanted to find this path. They hoped it would be a fast trade route to Asia. Many explorers tried to find it starting in 1492. However, they were blocked by land and thick ice. Some even thought the sea could not freeze at all. They hoped for an open sea near the North Pole.

These early trips were very hard and often ended in disaster. One famous example was the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin in 1845.

Finding the route took many years of hard work. In 1850, an Irish explorer named Robert McClure discovered it. He had to haul sledges across the ice to complete his trip.

Later, a Scotsman named John Rae explored a more southern area in 1854. The first person to sail the whole way by ship was Roald Amundsen.

He used a small ship called the Gjøa from 1903 to 1906.

In 2007, the passage was open to ships without using icebreakers. The largest commercial ship to ever go through was the SS Manhattan. It was 115,000 deadweight tonnage in size.

Some very large cargo ships might find the route too deep to use. For example, the Nordic Orion was 73,500 tonnes in 2013.

Using this route is still a very difficult job. Large chunks of ice can still clog the narrow straits. These ice pieces can even damage a ship's hull. Because of this, many shipping companies still find it risky. There are also debates about who owns the water. Canada says the waters are part of its own territory. The United States says the passage is an international strait. This means ships should be allowed to pass through freely.

These waterways connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. They wind through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago near the northern coast of North America.

This route is composed of many different islands and straits. Because of this geography, the area is also known as the Canadian Internal Waters. The passage represents a vital potential link for global maritime trade between Europe and Asia.

Navigating these waters involves moving through several distinct sections. The eastern section begins at Baffin Bay between Greenland and Baffin Island. From there, ships enter Lancaster Sound to reach the central part of the passage.

The central section consists of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The main axis here is the Parry Channel, which runs from Lancaster Sound to the Prince of Wales Strait.

To the south, routes may pass through Peel Sound or the Rae Strait. Finally, the western section follows the coast toward the Bering Strait to reach the Pacific.

Historically, the search for this passage drove much of European exploration. Starting in 1492, explorers sought a commercial route to Asia. They were often blocked by the massive landmasses of the Americas. Other obstacles included rough waters and thick Arctic ice. Some early explorers even believed in an "Open Polar Sea" near the North Pole. They thought the northern waters might be free of ice. However, many expeditions ended in disaster, such as the lost 1845 expedition of Sir John Franklin.

Discovery of the passage happened in stages through intense Arctic exploration. In 1850, the Irish explorer Robert McClure discovered the route. He completed his journey by hauling sledges across the ice. In 1854, the Scotsman John Rae explored more southern areas of the archipelago. The first person to complete the entire passage using only a ship was Roald Amundsen.

In recent years, the passage has become more accessible due to climate change. A decline in Arctic sea ice has made the waterways more navigable.

This was a historic event recorded by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The largest commercial vessel to ever navigate the passage was the SS Manhattan. It measured 115,000 deadweight tonnage. In 2013, the ship Nordic Orion carried 73,500 tonnes of cargo through the route.

Despite this accessibility, several factors limit the passage's use as a major shipping lane. Physical challenges remain, such as drifting chunks of large ice. These ice masses can clog narrow straits or damage a ship's hull. Furthermore, parts of the eastern end are reported to be very shallow. This depth limits the size of ships that can pass through. Many shipping companies prefer "just-in-time" delivery models. These models do not tolerate the delays and uncertainty of Arctic travel. High insurance premiums also make the route more expensive for many companies.

There are also significant legal and political questions regarding the passage. The Canadian government claims the Northwestern Passages are part of its Internal Waters. This means Canada maintains control over the territory. However, the United States claims the area is an international strait. They argue it should be a transit passage that allows free movement. These contested sovereignty claims may complicate future international shipping. As the ice continues to melt, these legal discussions will likely increase in importance.
