The eastern side is much drier because the mountains block the moisture. This area is called a rain shadow and can be quite semi-arid. In the summer, warm air and cool air can meet to make thunderstorms. High up in the mountains, it is much colder and stays snowy.
Ice plays a huge role in how these mountains look. There are about 700 glaciers in the whole range. Glaciers are large sheets of ice that move very slowly. In the past, glaciers carved deep, U-shaped valleys into the land. Some of the biggest glaciers are on volcanoes like Mount Baker or Glacier Peak.
Many different living things call this place home. There are more than 1,630 types of plants growing here.
Long ago, many different groups of people lived in and used this land. On the U.S. side, the Nooksack, Skagit, and Sauk-Suiattle tribes lived near the west. The Okanagan people lived on the eastern side. In Canada, the Nlaka'pamux people used hunting grounds in the heart of the mountains. The mountains themselves were built by many different pieces of Earth's crust. 
The North Cascades are a major section of the Cascade Range in western North America. 

The physical shape of the mountains results from complex geological and climatic forces. In the western part of the range, heavy precipitation falls as rain and snow. This moisture, combined with regional uplift, creates a dramatic landscape. During the Pleistocene epoch, massive glaciers carved deep, U-shaped valleys into the earth. More recent snow and ice continue to shape sharp ridges and steep peaks. In contrast, the northern and eastern areas are more plateau-like. Some parts of the Canadian Cascades feature rock "horns" rising from high, flat uplands. Areas like Manning Park and Cathedral Park are known for wide alpine meadows.
The geology of the North Cascades is incredibly complex and ancient. The mountains are built from many different "terranes." A terrane is a piece of the Earth's crust with a unique origin. There are perhaps ten or more different terranes in this region. These pieces are separated by ancient faults, such as the Straight Creek Fault. This fault runs north-to-south from British Columbia through Marblemount, Washington. Scientists believe the movement of these rocks is linked to the northward tectonic movement of the West Coast. Additionally, oceanic crust from the Pacific Ocean has been subducting under the continent for 35 million years. This subduction process created several stratovolcanoes, including Mount Baker and Glacier Peak.
Climate varies significantly based on elevation and location within the range. The western slopes are cool and wet, receiving high annual precipitation. This creates a temperate rain forest in the low valleys. As you climb higher, the climate shifts to montane and then alpine zones. The eastern slopes sit in a "rain shadow." This happens because prevailing winds bring moisture from the west, which the mountains block. Consequently, the eastern side is much drier and can be semi-arid. In the summer, warm eastern air and cool western air may meet to form thunderstorms. 
Temperature and snow patterns are also influenced by a process called "cold air damming." Cold Arctic air can flow south from British Columbia through the Okanogan River valley. This air becomes trapped in the basins and passes east of the Cascades. When milder Pacific air moves east, it is forced upward by this trapped cold air. This often causes mountain passes to receive more snow than the higher peaks. This unique effect makes ski resorts at Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass possible.
Glaciers are a defining feature of the North Cascades. There are approximately 700 glaciers in the entire range. The volcanoes, such as Glacier Peak, hold the largest glaciers. 
The North Cascades support a massive variety of life through eight distinct life zones. There are more than 1,630 species of vascular plants in the area.
Human history in the region involves many different Indigenous groups. On the United States side, the Nooksack, Skagit, and Sauk-Suiattle tribes lived on the west. The Okanagan people occupied the eastern side. In Canada, the Nlaka'pamux people claimed hunting territories in the heart of the mountains. These groups have long connections to the land and its resources.
