The Pacific Coast Ranges are a long chain of mountains. 
The mountains look different depending on where you are. In the north, you will see huge icefields. These are large areas of ice. 

The mountains also change the weather. In the north, they can catch cool air. This brings heavy rain and snow. In the south, the mountains can block the wet air. This creates dry desert areas on the other side. Many different types of rock make up these ranges. Some rocks are very old. Other rocks are only 10,000 years old.

Nature looks very different as you travel along these ranges. In the north, the mountains mix with the sea to create a maze of islands and fjords. 


These mountains also play a big role in the local weather. In the north, cool air from the Gulf of Alaska hits the mountains. This brings a lot of rain and snow to the western slopes. 
Geologists have studied how these mountains were built over millions of years. Much of the land was formed by pieces of earth called terranes. These pieces moved and joined onto the edge of the continent. 

Today, these ranges are important to the people and animals living nearby. Many famous mountain names are part of this system. 
The Pacific Coast Ranges are a vast series of mountain ranges. They stretch along the West Coast of North America. This system runs from Alaska south to northern and central Mexico. 
The formation of these mountains involves a complex geological process. Much of the land consists of accreted terranes. A terrane is a fragment of crustal material. These pieces moved across the ocean and joined the continent. Long ago, the breakup of Pangea began this movement. The North American plate started moving westward about 200 million years ago. This created an active margin on the western edge of the continent. As the continent drifted, various terranes were added to the coast. The insular belt was one such addition. Its exact timing is uncertain, but it closed at least 115 million years ago. 
Different geological events shaped various parts of the ranges. About 90 to 80 million years ago, the Farallon plate split. This created the Kula Plate to the north. In Northern California, these plates converged to form a Mélange. A Mélange is a chaotic mixture of different rock types. Later, the Siletzia terrane began to accrete in the Pacific Northwest. This event triggered volcanic activity in the Cascadia subduction zone. This process formed the modern Cascade Range. This volcanic activity lasted into the Miocene epoch.
The physical character of the ranges varies by location. In the north, the mountains meet the sea in a complex way. You will see fjords and thousands of islands. 


Weather patterns are heavily influenced by these mountains. In the north, cool air masses come from the Gulf of Alaska. This air hits the western slopes of the Coast Ranges. It causes heavy precipitation in the form of rain and snow. In Southern California, the mountains create a different effect. They cause an eastward rainshadow. This happens when mountains block moisture from reaching inland areas. This process produces arid desert regions. The mountains essentially act as a barrier to the weather.
Geology does not strictly define the Pacific Coast Ranges. Instead, they are defined by geography and social impact. The rocks within the ranges are extremely diverse. Some parts contain Precambrian metamorphic rock. This is very old rock from the earliest stages of Earth. Other areas, like the Cascade Range, have rocks only 10,000 years old. For example, the Peninsular Ranges are made of Mesozoic batholitic rock. This is very different from the San Bernardino Mountains. Despite these differences, they are grouped together because of their location. They all sit along the Pacific margin.
Many distinct mountain groups make up this massive system. In Alaska, you find the Kenai and Chugach Mountains. British Columbia contains the Coast Mountains and the Insular Mountains.
