The company is based in Yokohama, Kanagawa. It sells vehicles under the Nissan and Infiniti brands. They also have special brands like Nismo and Autech for performance tuning. Nissan is part of a large group called the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. This partnership includes Renault from France and Mitsubishi Motors from Japan. Nissan holds a 15% stake in Renault. It also holds a 34% controlling stake in Mitsubishi, though it reduced this to 24% in November 2024.

Building cars involves many steps and partnerships. In the early days, Nissan used technology from the United States. An American engineer named William R. Gorham helped guide their work. He is often called the founder of Nissan Motor Company.

The name DAT came from the last names of the investors. In 1931, they made the Datsun Type 11. The name Datsun means "Son of DAT." In 1933, the Nissan Group took control of DAT Motors. This is when the company began making cars under the Nissan name.

They also expanded to many other countries. They showed the Datsun Bluebird in Los Angeles in 1958. They even sold cars in Saudi Arabia starting in 1957. In 2017, Nissan was the sixth largest automaker in the world. By 2022, the company had a revenue of $78 billion. This made them the ninth largest maker of cars globally.

Today, Nissan is working through some hard times. An executive said in November 2024 that the company had little time left without major events. They are facing financial hardships but have a recovery plan.

The company is headquartered in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. It operates several distinct brands to reach different types of drivers. These include the main Nissan brand and the luxury Infiniti brand. For specialized vehicle tuning, the company uses the Nismo and Autech brands. Nissan is currently a central member of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. This global partnership includes Renault of France and Mitsubishi Motors of Japan. Within this alliance, Renault holds a 15% voting stake in Nissan. Nissan also holds a 15% stake in Renault. In 2016, Nissan acquired a 34% controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors. However, Nissan reduced this ownership to 24% in November 2024.

The company's origins began in the early 20th century. Masujiro Hashimoto founded a company in Tokyo on July 1, 1911. In 1914, this company produced its first vehicle, known as the DAT. The name was an acronym of the investors' surnames.

The company went through several name changes over the following years. It became Kaishinsha Motorcar Co., Ltd. in 1918 and DAT Jidosha & Co., Ltd. in 1925. During this era, the company focused heavily on producing trucks. This was because there was almost no market for passenger cars. Additionally, the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake created a need for disaster recovery efforts. DAT Motors also began producing trucks for the military in 1918.

Nissan's modern identity emerged through the Nissan zaibatsu. A zaibatsu is a large group of companies controlled by a single family or holding company. Yoshisuke Aikawa founded the holding company Nihon Sangyo in 1928. The name "Nissan" actually originated as an abbreviation for Nihon Sangyo on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This zaibatsu grew to include 74 different firms. By World War II, it was the fourth-largest zaibatsu in Japan. Aikawa did not enter automobile manufacturing directly until 1933. He achieved this by merging DAT Motors into Tobata Casting, which was already a Nissan company. This merger marked the true beginning of Nissan's automobile manufacturing history.

Technological development was heavily influenced by American engineering. An American engineer named William R. Gorham served as a vital figure for the company. Many historians consider him the true founder of the Nissan Motor Company.

Gorham helped implement cutting-edge machinery and processes from the United States. Nissan also utilized licenses from the Graham-Paige Company to build vehicles. In the 1930s, Datsun began building Austin 7 cars under license from the British Austin Motor Company.

This partnership was highly successful and helped Datsun achieve international recognition. Nissan used Austin patents to develop its own modern engine designs. This led to the creation of the advanced L engine in 1967. This engine powered the famous Datsun 240Z sports car, which became a global sensation.

The company also aggressively entered foreign markets during the mid-20th century. They showcased the Datsun Bluebird at the 1958 Los Angeles Auto Show. They also began selling vehicles in Saudi Arabia in 1957. By the late 20th century, Nissan was a massive global player. In 2017, it was ranked as the sixth largest automaker in the world. By 2022, Nissan reported a total revenue of $78 billion. This revenue placed it as the ninth largest automobile maker globally.

The company has recently faced significant financial challenges. In November 2024, a Nissan executive stated the company had as little as 12 months to live without major changes.

To address these hardships, Nissan has implemented a recovery plan. There were also discussions regarding a merger with the Honda Motor Company. In December 2024, Nissan announced plans to merge with Honda in 2026. However, Nissan changed its strategy by February 2025. The company decided to abandon the merger as a subsidiary. Instead, Nissan announced it wanted to become an equal partner to Honda.

Nissan's history shows how a small local manufacturer can become a global leader. It moved from making simple trucks for disaster relief to creating world-class sports cars. The company navigated labor disputes, such as the 1953 dispute, and emerged with new productivity models.

Through the use of international patents and engineering expertise, Nissan transformed its technology. From the early Datsun models to the modern Infiniti luxury line, the company continues to evolve. Its journey reflects the broader growth of the Japanese industrial sector. Even as it faces modern economic pressures, Nissan remains a major force in the global automotive industry.
