The history of Honda began with the passion of Soichiro Honda. He worked as a mechanic and tuned cars for races. In 1937, he founded Tōkai Seiki to manufacture piston rings. He initially struggled with quality control issues. He visited factories to study Toyota's "five whys" process to improve his work. After his original company faced destruction from a US bomber attack and an earthquake, he started over. In October 1946, he founded the Honda Technical Research Institute. He began with only 12 employees working in a small shack. They used surplus radio generator engines to create motorized bicycles. One early model was the Honda A-Type, nicknamed the "Bata Bata" due to its sound.

As the company grew, it moved from bicycles to complex machines. In 1949, the institute became the Honda Motor Co., Ltd. This transition was supported by the business expertise of Takeo Fujisawa. The first complete Honda motorcycle was the 1949 D-Type, known as the Dream. Honda's expansion into four-wheeled vehicles began in August 1963 with the T360 mini pick-up truck.

This was followed by the S500 sports car in October 1963. In 1986, Honda launched Acura, its first dedicated luxury brand. This helped the company compete in the high-end vehicle market.

The company has faced significant challenges and shifts in leadership. After Soichiro Honda passed away, the company struggled to keep up with the truck and SUV boom. In the early 1990s, Honda faced the threat of a hostile takeover by Mitsubishi Motors. CEO Nobuhiko Kawamoto responded by changing the corporate culture. He moved the company toward market-driven products like the Odyssey and the CR-V. He also ended Honda's participation in Formula One racing after 1992 to focus on costs and the environment. In 2013, Honda invested about 5.7% of its revenue, or $6.8 billion, into research and development.

Modern Honda is deeply involved in future technologies and global alliances. In 2021, they aimed to be the first carmaker to sell vehicles with level 3 self-driving technology. They are also working on electric vehicles through a joint venture with Sony. This partnership, called Sony Honda Mobility, plans to release vehicles under the "Afeela" brand. Honda is also exploring hydrogen fuel systems through a deal with General Motors. These systems aim to power electric vehicles, trucks, and construction machinery. The company continues to manage a massive global presence with assembly plants in many countries, including the US, China, and Brazil.

Power products and other items represent 1.9%. This diversity allows them to connect to many different parts of human life. They provide everything from personal transport to industrial power. Their work links mechanical engineering with the digital future of robotics and self-driving systems.
