The first unofficial meeting occurred on December 10, 1934, at a café in Paris. Six mathematicians attended this lunch: Henri Cartan, Claude Chevalley, Jean Delsarte, Jean Dieudonné, René de Possel, and André Weil. 
The group officially founded itself during a conference in Besse-en-Chandesse in July 1935. During this time, the membership included the original six plus Jean Coulomb, Charles Ehresmann, and Szolem Mandelbrojt. 
Bourbaki's impact on the mathematical community is profound. Jean Dieudonné once remarked that Bourbaki saved French mathematics from extinction. By organizing math into structures, they provided a new way to see the field. They moved mathematics away from isolated calculations toward a more unified, logical system. This helped bridge the gap between different branches of math. Even as the group's influence shifts, their rigorous standards continue to define modern mathematical thought.
