His early life was marked by significant hardship and displacement. He was born in Berlin to anarchist parents, Sascha Schapiro and Hanka Grothendieck.

During World War II, his family faced extreme danger. His mother and he were interned in various camps in France. His father was eventually sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was murdered in 1942.

Grothendieck found safety in the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Local residents helped hide refugee children there. It was at the Collège Cévenol that he first developed his fascination with mathematics.

Grothendieck's academic journey took him across several continents. After studying in France, he moved to the University of São Paulo in Brazil in 1953. He used a Nansen passport to travel because he refused French nationality. He did this to avoid mandatory military service, as he held strong pacifist convictions. In 1955, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas. There, he shifted his focus from topological vector spaces to algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. This period led to his influential "Tôhoku paper," which reformulated sheaf cohomology using abelian categories.

In 1958, Grothendieck became a research professor at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHÉS).

This period is often called his "Golden Age." He led intense seminars that trained a new generation of mathematicians. His students included notable figures like Pierre Deligne and Michael Artin. During this time, he developed the theory of schemes. This theory provided a more flexible foundation for algebraic geometry. He also introduced étale cohomology, which was essential for proving the Weil conjectures. His work on topos theory further generalized the concept of topology.

Grothendieck's contributions earned him the highest honors in his field. In 1966, he received the Fields Medal. This prize recognized his massive advances in algebraic geometry, homological algebra, and K-theory. His mathematical legacy includes the Grothendieck–Hirzebruch–Riemann–Roch theorem. He also created derived categories, which were later expanded by Jean-Louis Verdier. His ideas continue to influence diverse areas. For example, his work on Grothendieck inequality has connections to quantum physics and the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox.

Despite his mathematical success, Grothendieck was deeply driven by political and religious convictions. He was a radical pacifist who opposed military intervention in Vietnam and Soviet expansionism. In 1970, he left his position at IHÉS following a dispute over military funding. He later moved to the University of Montpellier. Eventually, he withdrew from the mainstream mathematical community. In 1991, he moved to the remote village of Lasserre in the Pyrenees. He lived in seclusion, focusing on philosophy and religion until his death in 2014.
