Maduro held several critical roles within the government before becoming president. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2000 and served as its president from 2005 to 2006. 
Upon the death of Hugo Chávez in March 2013, Maduro assumed presidential powers. He won a special election later that year, becoming the 53rd president of Venezuela.
