She was a historic leader in many ways. She was one of the first female republican heads of state in the world. She was also the first woman to ever serve as a president of a country. Her leadership occurred during a period of intense political division and social unrest.

Isabel was born María Estela Martínez Cartas in La Rioja, Argentina, in 1931. She left school after the fifth grade. In the early 1950s, she worked as a nightclub dancer. She adopted the name Isabel, which is the Spanish form of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. She met Juan Perón, a powerful Argentine politician, during his exile in Panama. Juan Perón was 35 years older than Isabel. They married on November 15, 1961, in Madrid, Spain. During Juan's exile, Isabel acted as a political messenger between Spain and Argentina.

Isabel rose to power through her marriage and her role in the Justicialist Party. In 1973, Juan Perón returned to Argentina to run for president. He won the election with 62% of the vote. He chose Isabel to be his Vice President to help balance different factions within his party. This decision helped settle disputes between the right-wing and left-wing members of the Peronist movement. On June 28, 1974, Juan Perón suffered heart attacks. Isabel was sworn in as acting president the next day. Juan Perón died on July 1, 1974.

This event led to Isabel becoming the official president.

Her presidency was defined by economic policies and rising political tension. She tried to follow the "Social Pact" and the economic nationalism of her husband. She passed a new employment contract law to help workers. She also gave the company YPF a monopoly over filling stations. However, her popularity began to fade. Many people felt that José López Rega held too much influence over her.

López Rega was the Minister of Social Welfare and a close friend of Isabel. He was known for his interest in occultism and astrology.

Political violence increased significantly during her term. A right-wing paramilitary group called the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance, or Triple A, was formed by López Rega. This group was accused of carrying out nearly 300 murders in the 1970s. At the same time, left-wing groups like the Montoneros and the ERP used violence to fight the government. The Montoneros were an anarchist group that carried out kidnappings and killings. The ERP was a Trotskyist group that also used violent tactics. These groups created a cycle of conflict that made the country very unstable.

The government responded to this violence with harsh measures. Isabel signed the Anti-Terrorism Law on September 30, 1974. This law reduced certain constitutional rights to combat leftist violence. In 1975, a military campaign called Operation Independence began in Tucumán. While it was a military success, it was noted for its brutality. The government also used federal powers to remove leftist governors and workers from their positions. Many people were arrested or disappeared during these periods of intense conflict.

Isabel's time in office ended due to a military coup in 1976. The military took control of the Argentine government, removing her from power. She was placed under house arrest for five years. In 1981, she moved to live in exile in Spain. Democracy was eventually restored to Argentina in 1983. Isabel attended the inauguration of President Raúl Alfonsín as a guest of honor. She participated in discussions about national reconciliation, but she never held a major political office again.

In later years, Isabel faced legal challenges regarding her time in power. In 2007, an Argentine judge ordered her arrest. This was related to a forced disappearance in 1976. The judge argued that her decrees allowed the armed forces to act against people labeled as "subversives." Isabel was arrested near her home in Spain. However, the Spanish courts eventually refused to send her back to Argentina for trial.
