The region is made of many different parts. It includes the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant. It can even include the Balkans in some definitions. Because it has so many different lands, people define it in different ways.

Many different groups have lived in and ruled these lands. For a long time, the Ottoman Empire held much of this territory. At its height in 1683, the empire was very large. It controlled parts of the Near East and North Africa. It also held lands in Central and Southeastern Europe.

The empire's borders were always changing over time. Some lands were lost as new nations became independent. For example, Greece and Serbia became their own kingdoms. The empire was sometimes called the "sick man of Europe" by people in the press. This was because it seemed like it might collapse.

People began using the name "Near East" in the 19th century. Before this, the terms meant something different to people. A person might call a nearby village the "near east" of their home. Western geographers created these new names to group distant lands together. They used "Near East" for the area closest to Europe. They used "Far East" for places like China, Japan, and Korea. This helped people organize their maps of the world. It was a way to describe how far away a place felt.

Specific events helped these names become very popular. The Crimean War in the 1850s changed how people talked about the world. During this war, the British government used these new words often. An interpreter named Thomas Taylor Meadows helped spread the terms to the public. He wrote about them in a letter to a newspaper.

This made the words "Near East" and "Far East" stick in people's minds. They replaced older names like the "Levant" or the "East Indies." These new names made it easier for people to talk about global politics.

Today, the way we use these words has changed again. Many news reporters and politicians use "Middle East" instead. They often use both terms to mean the same group of countries.

The National Geographic Society says they both describe the same territories. This includes the Arabian Peninsula, Cyprus, Egypt, and Turkey. However, there is no single, fixed list of every nation in the region. Different groups like the United Nations might include different countries. It is a region that is still being defined by how we study it.

The Near East is a transcontinental region located around the Eastern Mediterranean.

It encompasses several major historical and geographical areas. These include the Levant, Anatolia, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. It also includes the Arabian Peninsula and sometimes the Balkans. Because there is no single fixed list of nations, definitions vary. Some academic circles use different boundaries for the region. However, it is generally understood as a group of lands connecting Europe to Asia.

Historically, the term "Near East" emerged through a specific linguistic process. In the 19th century, Western geographers used it to categorize the world. They created a system of "three Easts" to organize distant lands. The "Far East" referred to East Asia and beyond. The "Middle East" originally meant the lands between the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia. The "Near East" was the part of the Orient closest to Europe. This helped Europeans organize their maps based on distance from home.

Many of these lands were once part of the Ottoman Empire. At its height in 1683, the empire was massive.

It controlled territory in the Near East and North Africa. It also held lands in Central and Southeastern Europe. The empire's borders were dynamic and always changing. By 1914, the empire had lost most of its European territories. Nationalist Balkan states like Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria gained independence. Because the empire seemed to be failing, the press called it the "sick man of Europe."

The shifting power of the Ottoman Empire led to the "Eastern question." This term described the complex relations between minorities and the empire. It also involved how former Ottoman lands would be managed. In the mid-19th century, the term "Near East" became more specific. It began to describe the Levant under the jurisdiction of the Ottoman Porte. The Porte was the central government of the Ottoman Empire.

Europeans often needed permits from the Porte to visit these shores.

A major turning point for this vocabulary was the Crimean War. This conflict took place between 1853 and 1856.

During this war, the British government used new regional terms frequently. They wanted to maintain a balance of power against the Russian Empire. An official Chinese interpreter named Thomas Taylor Meadows helped popularize these words. He published a letter in a periodical called Littell's Living Age. This helped the terms "Near East" and "Far East" replace older names like the "Levant."

Today, the terminology has shifted significantly in modern usage. Politicians and news reporters often use "Middle East" and "Near East" interchangeably.

The National Geographic Society states that both terms denote the same territories. These include Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has also used similar definitions. However, the FAO once included Afghanistan in its definition of the region. In 2012, the FAO defined the Near East as a subregion of the Middle East.

Understanding the Near East requires looking at how geography and politics overlap. The Asian portion of this region is often called "West Asia." The term "Near East" is now mostly used in historical contexts. It describes the countries from the Mediterranean to Iran. Because the region is defined by different organizations, its borders remain flexible. It remains a vital area for studying how empires expand and how new nations form. The history of the region is a story of constant movement and change.
