Nanning has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the area was home to the Baiyue ethnic groups. In the year 318, a place called Jinxing County was established there. Later, during the Tang dynasty in 632, it was renamed Yongzhou. In the year 1318, it finally received the name Nanning, which means "the Pacified South." The city has grown from an ancient settlement into a modern hub.

Moving around the city is very efficient for its many residents. There is a metro system called Nanning Rail Transit that uses several lines.

Geographically, Nanning is situated within a hilly basin. It sits in the southern part of Guangxi, near the border with Vietnam. This location makes the city a vital gateway for China-ASEAN cooperation and opening up.

The city's environment is shaped by a warm, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. This climate is characterized by high humidity and significant rainfall. Between May and October, rain is most frequent in the area. The annual rainfall reaches 1,756 mm. The annual mean temperature is 20 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot, with July being the hottest month. In July, the 24-hour average temperature reaches 28.8 degrees Celsius. Winters remain mild and dry. In January, the coolest month, the average temperature is 11.2 degrees Celsius. Snow is extremely rare here. It has only fallen twice since 1900. These instances occurred in December 1975 and January 2016, though the snow did not stick to the ground.

This warm climate supports immense biodiversity within the city. Nanning is home to more than 3,000 species of plants. There are also many different species of animals living in the region. The Jaba flower, an evergreen shrub, serves as the official city flower. The almond tree is the official city tree. This tree is used extensively for landscaping and greening the urban landscape. The city's geography includes elevations ranging from 11 meters to 210 meters above sea level. Qingxiu Mountain is a dominant feature in the southern part of the city.

Nanning has a history spanning many centuries. In ancient times, the area was inhabited by the Baiyue ethnic groups. A significant organizational milestone occurred in AD 318 during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. At that time, Jinxing County was established. This marked the beginning of a 1,700-year organizational history. During the Tang dynasty in AD 632, the area was renamed Yongzhou. It became the seat of the Yongzhou government, which is why it is sometimes called "Yong" for short. In AD 1318, during the Yuan dynasty, the name was changed to Nanning. This name means "the Pacified South."

The city has faced conflict, such as during the Lý–Song War in 1076. During that war, Yongzhou was besieged by Lý forces for forty-two days. After the garrison succumbed, the city was razed and its people were massacred.

In the modern era, Nanning has transformed into a massive economic center. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the city was captured in December 1949. The Nanning municipality was set up in January 1950. By February 1950, it was identified as the capital of Guangxi. In 1958, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was officially established with Nanning as its capital. The city's economy has seen sustained industrial growth. In 2015, Nanning's GDP was 341 billion RMB. The city also hosts the annual China–ASEAN Expo, which began in 2004. As of 2025, Nanning is recognized as one of the top 150 science cities globally based on research output.

Transportation in Nanning is highly developed to support its large population. By the end of 2024, the registered population was 8,267,900 people. This includes 4,503,400 people living in urban areas. The city uses the Nanning Rail Transit (NNRT) metro system. This system is expected to eventually comprise nine lines.
